Matter has been classified into 2 types basically
- Mixtures
- Pure substances
Mixtures:
It can be defined as particles of 2 or more substances present in any ratio as their composition is variable.
Based on its composition, we can classify the mixtures into 2 types.
1. Homogenous mixtures:
The components completely mix with each other i.e; particles of components of mixture is uniformly distributed.
Example: sugar solution, salt solution, air.
2. Heterogenous mixtures:
Particles of components of mixture is not uniformly distributed.
Example: salt and sugar components.
NOTE: we can separate the components of heterogeneous mixture by process of hand picking, filtration, crystallization etc..
Pure substances:
Particles of pure substances have fixed composition.
Example:
Glucose: It consists of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen in fixed ratio in its constituents.
Pure substances have been classified into 2 types:
1. Elements:
Element can be defined as the pure substance which is formed by the combination of similar atoms.
Example: H + H ——–> H2
O + O ——–> O2
2. Compounds:
Compound may be defined as the pure substance which is formed by the combination of one or more dissimilar atoms or different elements in fixed ration of their atomic weights.
Example: H2 + O2 ——–> H2O
