/    /  Stoichiometry and its calculations

Stoichiometry:

  • Stoichion –means element

Metron

Metron – means measure

  • Here we are measuring the elements with respect to its mass, volume, number of moles etc….
  • We can deal all these in balanced chemical reactions only.
  • Balanced chemical reactions can be called as stoichiometric reactions while unbalanced chemical reactions can be called as non-stoichiometric reactions.
  • In chemical reaction, we can represent the reactants on left hand side of the equation where as products can form on right hand side of the equation.

For example:

This is unbalanced chemical reaction.we should balance it now. After balancing,

The coefficients for oxygen and water has been represented as 2.

Those can be called as stoichiometric coefficients.

  • Let us take one example to discuss about the stoichiometric relations.

In this we can relate

  1. Mass –mass relationship
  2. Mole-mole relationship
  3. Mass – mole relationship
  4. Mass-volume relationship
  5. Volume-volume relationship etc….

Let me explain these relations based on the above equation.

  1. 16gm of methane is giving 44gm of carbon dioxide
  2. 2 moles of oxygen is giving 1 mole of carbon dioxide
  3. 64gm of oxygen is giving 1 mole of carbon dioxide
  4. 16gm of methane is giving 44.8 lit of water
  5. 4 lit of methane is giving 44.8 lit of water.
