EPROM

EPROM stands for erasable programmable read-only memory. It is a type of PROM that can retain its data when the power supply is switched off.

EPROM is an array of floating gate transistors that are programmed individually. EPROMs can be recognized easily by a transparent fused quartz window on the top of the package, through which the silicon chip is visible, which permits exposure to UV light during erasing.

Advantages of EPROM

  1. EPROM is non-volatile, therefore no external memory is required.
  2. It is effective.
  3. It is reprogrammable.

Disadvantages of EPROM

  1. The transistors used are of higher resistance.
  2. It needs UV light to erase data.
  3. The static power consumption is high.
  4. Erasing data in EPROM is time-taking.
