Concept of potential energy

Energy:

The capacity of doing work is called energy. Energy is a scalar quantity. The unit of energy is same as that of work.

Potential energy:

Energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position or configuration is known as Potential energy.

Examples:

1) Bird sitting on a branch of a tree.
