One such case involved a Microsoft VP, who reportedly encouraged a team of 400 engineers to increase AI-generated code from 30% to 50%. Mere weeks later, many from this very team found themselves included in the layoff batch.

Analysts suggest that the real motivation lies in cost efficiency amid soaring AI investments — such as data center expansions and deeper partnerships with OpenAI.

The impact of these decisions has gone beyond internal morale. During Microsoft’s Build 2025 event, a live protest from an employee spotlighted tensions over the company’s global alliances and ethical stance.

 For many engineers, the hardest truth is this: they played a key role in transforming Microsoft’s development process — only to be sidelined by the very innovation they championed.
