Adapt or Become Obsolete: GitHub CEO Urges Developers to Embrace AI
GitHub CEO Warns: “AI Will Soon Write Most Code – Developers Must Reinvent Themselves”
In a bold and forward-looking statement, GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke has urged developers worldwide to embrace Artificial Intelligence or risk becoming irrelevant in the rapidly evolving tech industry.
According to Dohmke, within the next two to five years, AI could be responsible for writing up to 90% of all software code. But instead of viewing this shift with fear, many developers are leaning into the change—learning to collaborate with AI tools, enhance their problem-solving skills, and step into more strategic, system-level roles.
“This is no longer about productivity—it’s about reinvention,” Dohmke emphasized in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter).
The Future Developer: AI Collaborator, Not Just a Coder
The GitHub CEO’s message is clear: The role of developers is transforming. AI isn’t replacing human talent but augmenting it, opening doors for developers to become:
System architects
Code reviewers
AI prompt engineers
Creative directors of code
An internal GitHub study observing 22 developers found that those embracing AI saw higher job satisfaction, increased ambition, and greater efficiency.
Education Must Evolve Too
Dohmke also stressed the need to transform coding education. It’s no longer just about learning syntax. Future developers should be taught how to:
Critically assess AI-generated solutions
Think at a system design level
Collaborate effectively with intelligent tools
